Donald Trump is making headlines once again as he prepares to contest the 2024 election results, igniting fears of a repeat of the controversies surrounding the 2020 election. Over the past few months, Trump and his allies have raised alarms, claiming that the upcoming election will be “stolen.” Similar to the narrative in the previous cycle, they are promoting unfounded theories about “noncitizen” voters, overseas ballot programs, and mail-in voting undermining the electoral process.
On Friday, Trump escalated his rhetoric by issuing a “cease and desist” message on his platform, Truth Social, effectively declaring his belief that the November election is rigged, just days into early voting. He stated, “I, together with many Attorneys and Legal Scholars, am watching the Sanctity of the 2024 Presidential Election very closely because I know, better than most, the rampant Cheating and Skullduggery that has taken place by the Democrats in the 2020 Presidential Election. It was a Disgrace to our Nation!”
In a noteworthy admission, Trump briefly acknowledged in September that he did, in fact, lose the 2020 election. However, his latest statements convey a strong conviction that he will win in 2024, coupled with a warning that anyone opposing him—including attorneys, election officials, and donors—will face repercussions.
“Therefore, the 2024 Election, where Votes have just started being cast, will be under the closest professional scrutiny and, WHEN I WIN, those people that CHEATED will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the Law, which will include long-term prison sentences,” Trump declared. He emphasized that this crackdown is essential to prevent the “Depravity of Justice” from recurring, stating, “We cannot let our Country further devolve into a Third World Nation, AND WE WON’T!”
Trump’s rhetoric extends to legal repercussions for various groups involved in the electoral process. He warned that “illegal voters” and “corrupt election officials” will be actively pursued and prosecuted, indicating an unprecedented level of scrutiny and potential legal action.
In battleground states like Georgia, Trump’s allies have taken concrete steps to influence election outcomes. A pro-Trump state election board introduced regulations that made it significantly harder for individuals to volunteer for polling positions. Trump had previously praised members of Georgia’s board, labeling them “pit bulls fighting for victory.” These regulations included mandates for poll workers to hand-count ballots after electronic submissions and granted local election officials the power to refuse to certify results. However, a judge recently overturned these rules.
Furthermore, prominent conservatives in Congress, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance, have hesitated to commit to accepting the results of the 2024 presidential election unequivocally. In an interview with NBC News’s Meet the Press, Johnson expressed doubt about certifying the results unless he could ensure the election was “free and fair and legal.” He asserted, “I think Donald J. Trump is your next president, and that can’t happen soon enough.”
