CNN poll conducted by SSRS has revealed intriguing insights into the upcoming 2024 presidential race, indicating that former President Donald Trump continues to maintain a lead over President Joe Biden, as per CNN on Sunday, April 28, 2024.
The poll also reflects divergent public opinions regarding the successes and failures of their respective presidencies.
In the latest poll, Trump’s support among registered voters remains steady at 49% in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup against Biden, mirroring the results of CNN’s previous national poll conducted in January. Conversely, Biden’s support stands at 43%, showing a minor decrease from January’s 45%.
One of the most notable shifts in public perception highlighted by the poll is the changing views on the first terms of both candidates.
A majority of Americans, comprising 55%, now regard Trump’s presidency as a success, a notable increase from the 44% who viewed it as such in a January 2021 poll conducted just before Trump left office.
This shift indicates a growing positive retrospective assessment of Trump’s time in office among the American populace.
On the contrary, opinions about Biden’s presidency have taken a more critical turn. A significant 61% of respondents characterize Biden’s presidency thus far as a failure, with only 39% considering it a success.
This sentiment marks a slight deterioration from January 2022, where 57% viewed Biden’s first year in office as a failure, indicating a persistent negative trend in public perception.
Partisan divisions are starkly evident in the poll results, with Republicans overwhelmingly united in their belief that Trump’s presidency was a success, with 92% expressing this view.
In contrast, Democrats are less cohesive in their assessment of Biden’s presidency, with only 73% considering it a success.
Among independents, 51% view Trump’s presidency as successful, while only 37% hold the same view regarding Biden’s presidency.
Interestingly, the poll also highlights a segment of the population, comprising 14%, who consider both Trump’s and Biden’s presidencies as failures, while 8% view both as successes.
Furthermore, about half of registered voters (47%) perceive Biden’s presidency as a failure while acknowledging Trump’s as a success, highlighting the nuanced and mixed opinions prevalent among the electorate.
Regarding specific policy areas, the poll indicates widespread disapproval of Biden’s handling of various issues.
A notable 60% of respondents disapprove of his overall job performance, with even his strongest issue approval ratings, such as health care policy (45% approval) and student loan debt (44% approval), remaining in negative territory.
One of the most significant areas of disapproval for Biden stems from his handling of the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, where his approval rating stands at a mere 28% against a substantial 71% disapproval rate. This issue generates particularly strong disapproval among younger demographics and Democrats.
The CNN poll, conducted by SSRS from April 18-23, surveyed a random national sample of 1,212 adults, including 967 registered voters.
The margin of sampling error for results among the full sample is plus or minus 3.4 percentage points, while for registered voters, it is plus or minus 3.8 points.
Overall, the poll sheds light on the evolving dynamics of public opinion as the 2024 presidential race looms closer, showcasing a continued lead for Trump while revealing contrasting assessments of the achievements and shortcomings of both candidates’ presidencies.
