Scathing rebuke, former President Donald Trump criticized President Joe Biden’s immigration policies, accusing him of “destroying” the country with his lax approach to border security. Trump’s comments, made during an interview with Philadelphia-based radio host Rich Zeoli, underscored his ongoing focus on illegal immigration, a central theme of his current presidential campaign.
Trump shared a story about a friend who encountered stringent scrutiny upon entering the United States by air, contrasting it with what he perceives as lenient treatment of illegal immigrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.
“A friend of mine came into the country—he flew in [on] an airline—he said he has never been treated like that. Yet, if you come by the millions, if you come through the southern border, nobody’s checking you. You just walk right through,” Trump stated.
His remarks come amid increasing concerns over illegal migration, with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data revealing over 2.4 million illegal migrant encounters at the southern border in the 2023 fiscal year, a significant increase from approximately 1.7 million in 2021.
Polls indicate that the mental acuity of President Biden and his immigration policies are top concerns for prospective Republican voters, outweighing worries about inflation and the cost of living. However, the Biden administration and the Democratic Party have shifted blame onto Republicans in the House and Senate for failing to pass comprehensive immigration reforms, with some accusing the GOP of avoiding the issue for political gain.
Trump’s critique extended beyond the southern border, highlighting increasing scrutiny of Chinese nationals by U.S. lawmakers and intelligence agencies. He questioned the ease with which Chinese individuals allegedly enter the U.S. without proper vetting, referencing recent incidents that raised concerns about national security.
The former president warned of the consequences of open-border policies, stating, “They’re living in a town near you, maybe your town.” He boasted about his administration’s efforts to strengthen border security, including the construction of “571 miles of wall,” with plans for another 200 miles if reelected.
However, according to Politifact and CBP data, the Trump administration built 458 total miles of primary and secondary border barriers, with only 52 miles of new primary border barriers where no previous barriers existed.
A recent Associated Press/NORC poll revealed that 68% of U.S. adults disapprove of Biden’s immigration policy, with only 31% approving. Among Democratic constituents, support for the president’s stance on immigration stands at just 56%.
As the debate over immigration policies intensifies, Trump’s remarks continue to fuel discussions on the state of the nation’s borders and the effectiveness of current and past administrations’ approaches to immigration control.
