President Donald Trump has always had a way with words—but now, one particular term has people scratching their heads. During a White House event on Wednesday, Trump unexpectedly launched into a tangent about the word “groceries”, describing it as “such an old-fashioned term but a beautiful term.”
“It sort of says a bag with different things in it,” he explained while discussing his latest tariff policies. “Groceries went through the roof, and I campaigned on that. I talked about the word ‘groceries’ for a lot.”
If this sounds oddly familiar, it’s because he’s brought up his love for the word before. Just last week, he mused, “It’s like an old-fashioned word, but really it’s not, and people understand it.” He even attempted to define it during a campaign speech in October, saying, “The word ‘grocery,’ it’s a sort of simple word. But it sort of means, like, everything you eat. The stomach is speaking, it always does.”
While Americans worry about rising food prices, social media users couldn’t help but mock Trump’s peculiar fixation. “A bag with different things in it”? One user joked, “That’s basically what’s going on inside his brain—just a sackful of random thoughts from the bargain bin.” Another pointed out, “He clearly hasn’t bought his own groceries in decades. That’s why he doesn’t care about making yours more expensive.”
Meanwhile, The Daily Show took to the streets to test Trump’s theory that “groceries” is an outdated term. Spoiler alert: No one agreed.
With inflation squeezing household budgets, many Americans see groceries as more than just a word—they see it as a painful expense. But for Trump, it’s just another campaign talking point.
