Former President Donald Trump has ignited a firestorm of criticism with recent remarks targeting Jewish voters. In an interview with Sid Rosenberg on 77WABC, aired on July 30, 2024, Trump asserted that Jewish Americans who vote for Democrats are “absolute fools,” a statement that has drawn widespread condemnation.

The American Jewish Committee (AJC), a leading Jewish advocacy organization, strongly denounced Trump’s comments. The AJC warned of the dangerous implications of his rhetoric, especially amidst a rise in antisemitism. “The statement by the former president is divisive and potentially dangerous,” the AJC said in a statement. They stressed that no group should be targeted based on their beliefs or political choices.

During the interview, Trump also suggested that Jewish voters who support Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris “should have their head examined.” He claimed that Jewish people who vote Democrat, regardless of their stance on Israel, are foolish. This statement has been criticized for its offensive nature and apparent endorsement of derogatory remarks.

The controversy further escalated when Rosenberg made disparaging comments about Doug Emhoff, Harris’s Jewish husband. Trump’s apparent agreement with these comments has been widely condemned for promoting antisemitic stereotypes.

This isn’t the first time Trump has faced backlash for his remarks about Jewish Americans. Earlier this year, he claimed that Jewish Democrats “hate their religion.” These statements follow other controversial assertions, including a claim that Harris, despite her marriage to a Jewish man, harbors animosity towards Jewish people and Israel.

The timing of Trump’s comments is particularly sensitive, coming amid rising antisemitic incidents in the U.S., exacerbated by the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. His rhetoric has been criticized for contributing to a climate of fear and division.

Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign responded by calling Trump’s vision for the country “bitter, bizarre, and backward looking” and accused him of insulting Jewish voters’ faith. However, further comments from her office have not yet been provided.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the highest-ranking Jewish official in the U.S., also condemned Trump’s remarks. In a speech, Schumer criticized Trump for perpetuating harmful stereotypes about Jewish voters and labeled his comments as “reprehensible, dangerous, and disturbingly at ease with antisemitic rhetoric.”

The backlash against Trump’s statements highlights ongoing concerns about antisemitism and the impact of divisive political rhetoric.
