From a fiery and accusatory post on his new social media platform, Truth Social, former President Donald Trump launched a scathing attack against New York Supreme Court Judge Arthur Engoron. Trump’s outburst occurred just days ahead of Engoron’s impending ruling on whether Trump was involved in civil fraud, as reported by Conservative Brief on Friday, January 5, 2024.
Trump spared no words in his criticism, labeling Judge Engoron a “political hack” and directing similar accusations at New York Attorney General Letitia James, the one behind the lawsuit targeting Trump.
The focal point of Trump’s outrage stemmed from Engoron’s refusal to grant Trump’s plea for a jury trial and what Trump asserted as an “illegal and unconstitutional” suppression of his and his legal team’s freedom of speech.
Accusing Engoron of deliberately disregarding an appellate court decision that invalidated portions of James’ lawsuit, Trump painted the judge’s actions as politically motivated, with an aim to inflict harm upon him.
The intensity of Trump’s social media tirade is indicative of his mounting anxiety regarding Engoron’s imminent verdict, which could potentially result in fines amounting to $250 million and a prohibition on Trump conducting business in New York.
Having been found culpable for fraud in the prior year, Engoron is currently deliberating on the extent of punitive measures to be imposed on the former president.
Despite Trump’s vehement allegations of bias and ethical misconduct against Engoron, legal experts caution that his aggressive approach might yield adverse consequences. Trump’s strategy mirrors the tactics of defendants in the notorious “Chicago 7” trial, who faced severe repercussions for deliberately provoking the presiding judge.
Moreover, Engoron has already engaged in heated clashes with Trump’s legal team during court proceedings. Trump’s online invectives are unlikely to endear him to the judge when the final ruling is delivered.
Trump’s confrontational stance, instead of appealing to Engoron’s impartiality, appears to embrace his characteristic aggressive tactics. However, such a strategy of attacking the judge deciding his fate could potentially worsen Trump’s legal standing.
As Engoron’s decision draws nearer, Trump’s online outburst reflects a frantic attempt to discredit the judge preemptively, portraying himself as a victim ensnared in a politically motivated vendetta.
Nevertheless, the balance of power currently rests firmly with Engoron. Trump’s attempt to discredit the judge may only serve to underscore his desperation to evade accountability, rather than persuade the public of any bias on Engoron’s part.
