U.S. President Donald Trump has just signed a controversial executive order that slashes taxpayer-funded benefits for undocumented migrants. Titled ‘Ending Taxpayer Subsidization of Open Borders,’ the order aims to eliminate public assistance programs for those residing in the country illegally.
The order, signed on February 19, directly references the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (PRWORA), emphasizing that federal law already prohibits undocumented individuals from receiving most taxpayer-funded benefits. However, according to Trump’s administration, previous leaders—particularly former President Joe Biden—have undermined these restrictions, leading to what they describe as a misuse of public resources.
What’s Changing Under Trump’s Order?
Currently, undocumented migrants are largely barred from welfare programs, but under specific circumstances—such as being granted parole—they can qualify for certain benefits over time.
