Donald Trump’s latest town hall event took an unexpected turn when the former president stopped answering audience questions and instead spent nearly an hour dancing and requesting music. While some onlookers likened the event to a lighthearted “American Bandstand” moment, others voiced concerns about Trump’s behavior.
Boston Globe reporter Kimberly Atkins Stohr suggested that Trump’s actions could be indicative of “live sundowning.” The term “sundowning” is used to describe a phenomenon where older adults, particularly those with Alzheimer’s or dementia, exhibit increased agitation, confusion, or other symptoms in the late afternoon or evening. According to the Alzheimer’s Society, those affected by sundowning may experience intense distress, hallucinations, or delusions.
MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell initially found humor in the situation, commenting that the incident felt like a “break for 30 minutes,” akin to a retro dance show. However, it lasted much longer—57 minutes in total—raising questions about Trump’s ability to handle the demands of the presidency.
Republican strategist Susan del Percio compared the spectacle to old Vaudeville acts, where performers would be dragged offstage by a giant hook. Although Trump’s supporters seemed to enjoy the impromptu dance session, some analysts expressed concerns about how such behavior might impact swing voters, especially those looking for leadership and stability.
Atkins Stohr stressed the seriousness of the situation, noting that the event highlighted Trump’s unfitness for office. “He is supposed to answer questions,” she said. “Instead, he’s melted down into this bizarre, inexplicable behavior. Characterizing it as a dance party doesn’t do it justice—this is someone who could have control over the nuclear codes, and he clearly did not seem okay.”
