August 10, 2024, it has been two years since Mahmood Habibi, an Afghan American businessman, was wrongfully detained by the Taliban. In a recent tweet, U.S. Representative Zoe Lofgren pledged her ongoing commitment to securing Habibi’s release and reuniting him with his family.

Habibi, a U.S. citizen and civil aviation expert, was arrested by Taliban officials outside his home in Kabul on August 10, 2022. Despite being held captive for two years, the Taliban has consistently denied Habibi’s detention in discussions with U.S. authorities.

Lofgren, a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, expressed her dedication to this cause, stating, “Today marks two years since Mahmood Habibi was wrongfully detained by the Taliban. He has been held captive ever since. I remain committed to bringing Mahmood home & I will continue to advocate for his release to finally reunite him with his family.”

Habibi’s wrongful detention has sparked growing calls from U.S. officials and his family for his release. His brother, Ahmad Habibi, described Mahmood as his “best friend,” voicing deep concern for his well-being. Meanwhile, Mahmood’s wife, Zulhija Habibi, who managed to escape to the U.S. with their daughter, has faced significant personal and financial challenges due to his absence.

Zulhija told PBS NewsHour, “It’s been a year that he has been detained, but we have no information about him. I can’t study because of the stress.”

In response to the ongoing situation, Lofgren introduced House Resolution 1066 on March 7, 2024. The resolution calls for Habibi’s immediate release and condemns the wrongful detention of U.S. citizens by the Taliban. The resolution has been referred to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Lofgren stated, “Mahmood Habibi was unlawfully arrested in August 2022, and his family deserves answers and his safe return home. I will continue to work with the State Department and my colleagues in Congress to ensure Mahmood’s release and the release of all U.S. citizens wrongfully detained by the Taliban.”

The U.S. State Department has also made the release of American detainees in Afghanistan a priority, including Habibi and Ryan Corbett, who was detained in a separate incident in August 2022. The department reaffirmed on August 8, 2024, that securing the release of these individuals remains a top priority.

As the two-year mark of Habibi’s detention approaches, his family and supporters remain hopeful that continued advocacy and diplomatic pressure will lead to his release. Lofgren’s ongoing efforts in Congress and her recent tweet underscore the dedication of U.S. officials to bringing Habibi and other wrongfully detained Americans home.

This case highlights the significant challenges faced by U.S. citizens abroad and the crucial role of diplomatic efforts in protecting their rights and ensuring their safe return. As the situation in Afghanistan remains uncertain, the U.S. government’s commitment to resolving these issues is vital for the safety and well-being of its citizens.
