In a recent report by Politico columnist Jonathan Martin, concerns within President Joe Biden’s own team regarding his age and ability to run for a second term have come to light. The 80-year-old president, seeking re-election, faces internal skepticism about his capacity to campaign effectively and govern as energetically as a younger leader.
Martin pointedly remarked on Biden’s limitations, stating, “He simply does not have the capacity to do it, and his staff doesn’t trust him to even try, as they make clear by blocking him from the press.”
During the 2024 elections, Martin describes the circumstances as “extraordinary,” emphasizing Biden’s unique challenges. He notes, “Biden refuses to accept his capacity to do the job. The oldest president in history when he first took the oath, Biden will not be able to govern and campaign in the manner of previous incumbents.”
The report highlights a moment where Biden’s team, mindful of his age, is described as actively preventing him from engaging with the press, a measure seemingly taken due to concerns over his effectiveness.
Biden’s campaign during the 2020 election was relatively low-key due to the COVID-19 outbreak and his commitment to social isolation. However, as the 2024 elections loom, Democrats are urging him to consider unconventional approaches.
A survey conducted by the Associated Press-NORC in August revealed that 7 in 10 respondents believed Biden is too elderly to be a successful president. Among Democrats, this concern was shared by 69% of respondents. The survey indicated that 26% associated terms like “old” or “outdated” with Biden, while 15% thought of words like “slow” or “confused.”
Notably, Donald Trump, Biden’s potential opponent in 2024, is only three years younger than the current president. However, public perception differs, with only half of those polled considering Trump too old for the presidency. Associations with negative attributes related to age were minimal, with just 1% linking Trump to his age and 3% associating him with being sluggish and confused.
Recent polling data, as reported by The Hill, suggests that among young voters, Biden and Trump are nearly tied in popularity. Progressive organizations, including March for Our Lives, GenZ For Change, and the Sunrise Movement, have expressed concerns in an open letter to Biden regarding his stance on Gaza. They warn that his position risks alienating millions of young voters, urging him to take immediate action to broker a ceasefire and revive the peace process in the region.
As the 2024 elections approach, these internal concerns and external pressures create a complex backdrop for President Biden’s potential second-term bid.
