President Donald Trump’s plan to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education has been labeled “the most horrific thing” he and Elon Musk have done, according to Democratic Rep. Robert Garcia. Speaking on MSNBC, Garcia didn’t hold back, slamming the proposal as a direct attack on families, students, and teachers nationwide.
“What people don’t understand is that the Department of Education is the single largest supporter for families who have children with disabilities in America’s classrooms,” Garcia explained. He warned that eliminating the department would be catastrophic, as federally funded programs that provide essential support for special needs students would be at risk.
Trump, in his bid to revamp federal education policy, has claimed that sending education funds directly to states would be more effective. But Garcia dismissed that notion as “a flat-out lie,” cautioning that many Republican-led states would divert those funds to private institutions that exclude special needs students and fail to provide necessary resources.
“This is an attack, yes, on families, on students, on teachers,” Garcia declared, warning that the most vulnerable children would suffer the most.
Blasting Trump’s allies for enabling such a drastic policy, Garcia called on Americans to take action. “We should all be protesting in the streets about this and be incredibly angry,” he urged. His message was clear: the fight to protect educational resources for children with disabilities is far from over.
