A trio of US women’s soccer stars has made waves at the 2024 Paris Olympics with a fresh nickname for themselves. In a recent interview on the Today Show, forwards Trinity Rodman, 22, Mallory Swanson, 26, and Sophia Smith, 23, shared their new moniker with hosts Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb.
Sophia Smith introduced the nickname, saying, “We also have a name for ourselves. We have an announcement. Trinity, take it away.” Rodman then revealed, “We have a proposal for our trio name to be ‘Triple Espresso.’” This name pays homage to their collective impact on Team USA’s success, as the trio combined for nine of the team’s ten goals leading them to the Olympic final.
The US women’s soccer team, featuring this dynamic trio, has been a force to reckon with. They will face Brazil in the final, showcasing their exceptional skills and resilience. In the semifinals, Smith scored the decisive goal in extra time, with Swanson providing the assist, securing a 1-0 victory over Germany. Earlier, Rodman’s crucial extra-time goal against Japan ensured a 1-0 win and a place in the semifinals.
Smith’s 24th birthday is just a day after the Team USA versus Brazil match on August 11. She expressed her birthday wish: “There’s only one thing I want for my birthday. That would be the best birthday ever, and we would have the best birthday party afterwards.”
Under the guidance of new head coach Emma Hayes, Rodman, Swanson, and Smith have quickly become key players for the team, stepping out of the shadows of veterans like Megan Rapinoe, Carli Lloyd, and Alex Morgan. Despite their youth, Swanson’s Olympic debut came at just 17 years old in Rio 2016, while Smith and Rodman showcased their talents at last year’s FIFA World Cup.
As they prepare for their final match, the trio’s new nickname, “Triple Espresso,” symbolizes their powerful impact and camaraderie on the field. Fans and teammates alike are eager to see if they can deliver a gold medal performance, marking a triumphant return to Olympic glory for Team USA.
