A U.S. Navy warship successfully intercepted multiple drones and three cruise missiles that were fired from Yemen and appeared to be heading “potentially towards Israel,” as reported by a Defense Department spokesman on Thursday.
The USS Carney was patrolling the northern Red Sea when it swiftly neutralized the threat posed by the incoming missiles and over a dozen drones, announced Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder, the Pentagon press secretary. Fortunately, there were no casualties resulting from this operation; however, officials caution that similar incidents “may be ongoing.”
The interception comes amidst escalating tensions in the region following a devastating hospital explosion in Gaza and a series of drone attacks on U.S. military bases in the Middle East.

On Wednesday, two drones targeted al-Tanf, a U.S. garrison in southern Syria. While one of the drones was successfully neutralized, the other struck the base, causing minor injuries among a small number of U.S. troops. Investigations into the origin of these drones are still underway, but initial assessments point to the involvement of Iranian-backed militias.
In a separate incident on the same day, three drones attacked U.S. and coalition forces in Iraq. U.S. forces promptly intercepted one drone that targeted a base in northern Iraq and another that attacked the al-Asad military base in western Iraq. The second drone, struck by coalition forces, fragmented, and some debris hit a hangar where people were taking shelter. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries or fatalities; however, several individuals sustained minor lacerations.
General Ryder clarified that a civilian contractor tragically passed away due to a cardiac episode at al-Asad, unrelated to the drone attacks. The contractor had been in shelter following early warning alarms, signaling a potential threat. Despite the alarms, no attack transpired, underscoring the tense atmosphere prevailing in the region.
