The Golden State Warriors and forward Jonathan Kuminga were unable to finalize a contract extension before Monday’s rookie contract deadline, according to a report by The Athletic’s Anthony Slater. Kuminga, one of the Warriors’ two first-round draft picks from 2021, is set to enter the 2024-25 NBA season without a long-term deal in place.
The deadline marked the last opportunity for players selected in the 2021 NBA Draft to secure multi-year extensions before potentially becoming restricted free agents next offseason. Despite initial discussions, Kuminga and the Warriors were reportedly far apart in negotiations, with sources noting that the 22-year-old sought a five-year, $224 million max contract. Talks did not progress close to an agreement before the deadline.
In contrast, Golden State locked in another key young player, Moses Moody, on a three-year, $39 million deal over the weekend. Moody, drafted 14th overall in 2021, secured his future with the team as they continue to build around their young core.
Kuminga is coming off a breakout season where he posted impressive stats, averaging 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 52.9 percent from the field across 74 games, including 46 starts. With no deal in place, Kuminga will look to solidify his position and continue his upward trajectory throughout the 2024-25 season, aiming for a potential lucrative contract next summer.
