As the festive season envelops the nation, citizens across various backgrounds have publicly expressed their Christmas wishes for President Joe Biden, ranging from calls for peace to concerns about border security and the President’s political future in 2024.
Rick, a local resident on Nashville’s bustling Broadway street, left no room for ambiguity, stating, “Get out of office. Nothing else,” mirroring a sentiment echoed by others like Neil, who believes that opting not to seek re-election “would be the greatest gift he could give to America.”
The desire for President Biden to step away from the 2024 election appears to be a common thread among interviewees, as reflected by Reese, who, despite liking Biden, expressed, “We need somebody else.”
Yet, opinions diverge. Mel, for example, wishes for the president’s re-election, praising Biden’s performance and attributing criticism to political bias.
As President Biden approaches the end of his third year in office, he faces a myriad of challenges, including the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Israel-Hamas war, persistently high inflation resulting in a decade-high credit card debt, and a southern border crisis with a record-breaking 2.4 million migrant encounters in fiscal 2023.
A recent New York Times and Siena College survey adds complexity to the situation. Released on Tuesday, the survey shows Biden trailing former President Trump 46%-44% among registered voters in a hypothetical 2024 general election rematch. Notably, a major shift is observed among voters aged 18-29, with Trump now leading 49%-43%, a stark change from July when Biden held a 10-point lead in similar polling.
Despite these challenges and political divides, some citizens express more hopeful Christmas wishes. Peggie seeks “peace” above all, while Kat emphasizes securing the border to preserve the American way of life.
Ross addresses societal challenges, wishing for increased support for the less fortunate, especially veterans living in poverty. “Anything to help them out is the best thing I could ask for,” he noted.
The call from Reese for Biden to “not run again” contrasts with Chuck’s perspective, who believes the president should “just keep doing what he’s doing.”
The sentiments continue with Lisa urging the president to “quit lying,” and Joan requesting that he “get a grip.” Joan expresses concern about Biden’s connection with ordinary working people, stating, “I don’t think he’s in touch with the American people, the ordinary working people.”
