The White House has denied reports suggesting that Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has been sidelining National Security Spokesperson John Kirby from briefings, despite ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Speculation about a growing rift between the two spokespeople surfaced after Kirby’s reduced presence at the podium in recent months.

According to sources speaking to Axios, Jean-Pierre has privately voiced concerns about Kirby’s prominence in foreign affairs communication, reportedly feeling that his appearances at the podium overshadow her role. However, Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates refuted these claims, asserting that Jean-Pierre and Kirby maintain a “respectful relationship” and that the notion of a feud is “inaccurate.”

Growing Tensions?

Since the departure of President Biden’s top communications aide, Anita Dunn, in July, Jean-Pierre has reportedly taken a more dominant role in the briefing room, while Kirby has appeared less frequently. While Kirby was a frequent figure during the early stages of the Hamas-Israel conflict in October 2023, his presence at the podium has significantly decreased, with him participating in only three out of 20 briefings since Dunn’s exit.

Jean-Pierre is said to have pushed back against suggestions for Kirby to appear, with the decision now falling to White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients. This shift has led to speculation that Jean-Pierre, who has long been uneasy about Kirby’s influence, is now seeking more control over the White House’s communications strategy.

Kirby’s Reduced Role

Kirby, a seasoned communicator with experience as the State Department spokesperson and Pentagon press secretary, was a prominent figure in the White House briefings before Dunn’s departure. However, insiders claim that Jean-Pierre saw his role as making her appear as if she needed a “chaperone” in handling sensitive foreign policy issues. This reportedly led to her advocating for more autonomy in deciding when Kirby should appear.

Despite the claims, both Kirby and Jean-Pierre have publicly praised each other in past statements, with Kirby once calling it a “privilege” to work alongside Jean-Pierre. Nevertheless, tensions between the two seem to be simmering, particularly as the election season approaches and the stakes for the White House’s messaging rise.

White House Response

The White House has continued to emphasize the strong working relationship between Jean-Pierre and Kirby. Bates reiterated that Jean-Pierre and Kirby work together to determine the most effective way to communicate on both domestic and international issues. He added that the administration has featured a variety of spokespeople at recent briefings to address urgent topics beyond foreign policy.

As the election nears and international tensions remain high, Kirby’s role in the White House briefings is expected to evolve, with sources suggesting that his reduced appearances may have been part of a larger strategy in preparation for the election cycle. However, several current and former White House staffers have expressed frustration at Kirby’s absence during critical moments of global conflict.

Whether this internal tug-of-war will impact the administration’s communication strategy in the coming months remains to be seen. Still, both Jean-Pierre and Kirby will likely continue to navigate their roles in what has become an increasingly high-stakes environment.
