White House has announced plans to host a Juneteenth concert later this month, featuring a stellar lineup of award-winning Black artists from various music genres. Set to take place on June 10 at the White House’s South Lawn, the event is part of the Black Music Month celebrations.
The lineup for the concert includes renowned names such as R&B singer and actress Patti LaBelle, Grammy award winner Gladys Knight, and gospel sensation Kirk Franklin. Additionally, the event will feature performances by Raheem DeVaughn, Doug Fresh, Anthony Hamilton, Patina Miller, Brittney Spencer, Trombone Shorty, Charlie Wilson, Roy Wood, Jr., and the U.S. Marine Band.
Described as a celebration of community, culture, and music, the concert aligns with Black Music Month, dedicated to honoring the significant contributions of Black musicians to American music and culture.
This marks the second Juneteenth concert hosted by the White House since President Joe Biden signed bipartisan legislation in 2021, officially establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday. In a recent proclamation, President Biden highlighted the profound impact of Black music on American art and culture, acknowledging its role in reflecting the nation’s history and identity.
Juneteenth, commemorating the day Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 to announce the end of slavery, holds deep historical significance as a celebration of freedom and resilience.
The concert is supported by various organizations, including the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, Institute for Museum and Library Services, and Adobe.
The announcement comes after a proposed resolution, led by Rep. Shontel Brown and endorsed by 40 Democrats, sought to designate June as Black Music Month. This initiative, supported by institutions like the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the National Museum of African American Music, aims to educate and celebrate the rich legacy of Black music throughout history.
With its lineup of iconic performers and thematic resonance, the White House’s Juneteenth concert promises to be a vibrant tribute to Black artistry and cultural heritage, resonating with audiences across the nation.
