153rd Annual National Rifle Association (NRA) Meeting held in Dallas, Texas, former President Donald Trump delivered a keynote address that quickly became the subject of widespread controversy and ridicule. During his speech, Trump claimed that a former White House doctor had declared him a “better physical specimen” than former President Barack Obama, according to a report by Inquisitr on May 20, 2024.
Trump asserted that Dr. Ronny Jackson, who served as the White House physician for both presidents, made this comparison. “They asked him, ‘Who is a better physical specimen, is it Donald Trump, or is it Obama?'” Trump recounted to the audience on Saturday, May 18. “He said, ‘It is not even close, Donald Trump, not even close,’ and I said, ‘I love this guy. Dr. Ronny Jackson.'”
While the remark elicited laughter from those present, the response on social media was far less forgiving. Users on the platform X (formerly Twitter) quickly mocked and criticized the former president. One user denounced Trump, stating, “When it comes down to it, he’s just a deeply sick man in every way a human can be.” Another user commented disparagingly, “Today in the delirious ravings of a morbidly obese drug-addicted and dementia-addled lunatic.”
Questions about the appropriateness and accuracy of Trump’s claim also abounded, with one user rhetorically asking, “Why on Earth would he say this? Why would this person boast that a doctor says he is more fit than Obama?” The backlash continued with prominent figures and commentators adding their voices. Ron Filipkowski, editor at Meidas Touch Network, tweeted, “The insecure malignant narcissist mixed with dementia and autocratic delusions of grandeur wants voters to fill the hole in his heart left by a mom who didn’t hug him as a child.” Michael Steele of MSNBC, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee, remarked, “The lies dumbass people are told by dumbass people.”
Amid the flood of criticism, another commenter jested, “Does he even know who he’s running against? Not sure he’s even healthier than Biden let alone Obama lol.” Similar sentiments were echoed with statements like, “Donald, people who died last year are in better shape than you,” and a blunt outline of the word ‘delusion.’ One tweet succinctly stated, “Trump is a walking dementia brain in a diaper.”
This incident is not the first time Trump has invoked Obama’s name in his speeches. Forbes notes that Trump’s references to Obama often include a mix of intentional jabs and occasional gaffes. Trump’s fixation on Obama predates his presidency, most notably beginning with the propagation of the false “birther” conspiracy, which claimed that Obama was not born in the United States. Despite this falsehood being debunked, Trump persisted in promoting it until a retraction in 2016 when he finally stated, “President Barack Obama was born in the United States, period.” He further attempted to shift blame by falsely claiming that Hillary Clinton’s 2008 campaign had initiated the controversy.
Trump’s controversial remarks at the NRA meeting and the ensuing social media backlash underscore the polarizing nature of his public statements and the ongoing scrutiny of his fitness for office. As the 2024 presidential race heats up, these episodes continue to shape public perception and fuel the broader political discourse.
