KANSAS CITY, Mo. — In a devastating accident, a woman and a child have been hospitalized with critical injuries after being struck by a car on Interstate-435. The incident occurred on Friday evening, prompting an immediate response from investigators and emergency services.
The Circumstances Leading to the Crash
According to police reports, the woman and the 5-year-old child were passengers in an SUV that had run out of gas on the highway. The SUV came to a halt in one of the lanes of traffic, prompting the driver to activate the hazard lights to warn other drivers.
Meanwhile, the driver of a black Suzuki Grand Vitari informed investigators that due to heavy traffic, he was unable to change lanes in time to avoid the stalled SUV. To avoid a collision, he maneuvered onto the right shoulder of the highway. Tragically, as he pulled onto the shoulder, the woman and child exited the SUV from the passenger side and stepped onto the shoulder.
The Impact and Severe Injuries
The driver reported that he applied the brakes upon seeing the pedestrians but was unable to stop in time, resulting in a collision with both the woman and the child. The force of the impact threw them several feet onto the pavement, causing life-threatening injuries.
Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene and transported the woman and child to nearby hospitals for immediate medical attention.

Law enforcement authorities are actively investigating the incident to gather more information about the events leading up to the crash. They will be examining factors such as traffic conditions, the driver’s response, and any other contributing factors to determine the cause of the collision.
