Former Republican strategist Mike Madrid has made a bold statement regarding Donald Trump’s recent campaign decisions, suggesting that the former president’s choice to feature a comedian known for insulting Puerto Ricans at his Madison Square Garden rally could significantly impact his chances in the 2024 presidential election. In an interview with Greg Sargent from The New Republic, Madrid pointed out the potential consequences of this misstep, especially in a crucial battleground state like Pennsylvania.
The Importance of Puerto Rican Voters in Pennsylvania
Madrid emphasized the demographic significance of Puerto Ricans in Pennsylvania, highlighting that approximately 450,000 Puerto Ricans reside in the state. While not all are registered to vote, their presence is substantial enough to sway the election results. He noted that about 6 percent of the Pennsylvania electorate identifies as Latino, with roughly 3.7 percent of that group being of Puerto Rican descent. Cities like Allentown, home to around 33,500 Puerto Ricans, could play a pivotal role in determining the outcome of the election.
Celebrity Influence on Voter Sentiment
Further stressing the potential repercussions of Trump’s choice, Madrid pointed to the influence of prominent Puerto Rican artists like Bad Bunny and Ricky Martin, who have criticized the comedian’s remarks. Their public statements could resonate with voters who might not otherwise engage with the election process. Madrid believes that if they can sway just 10,000 to 15,000 Puerto Rican voters away from Trump and back to Vice President Kamala Harris, it could bolster Harris’s chances significantly.
The October Surprise
As the interview concluded, Madrid did not hold back in his criticism of Trump, referring to this situation as the “October surprise.” He stated, “Surprise, Donald Trump, you blew yourself up.” According to Madrid, this blunder could indeed hand Pennsylvania to Kamala Harris, marking a challenging moment for Trump’s campaign as the election approaches.
