Quiet night in Costa Mesa turned deadly late Monday when 20-year-old Monserrat Colorado was gunned down on a residential street — a heartbreaking incident that’s now the focus of an intense police investigation.
Just after 11 p.m. on June 2, multiple 911 calls flooded into the Costa Mesa Police Department, reporting the sound of gunfire and a woman lying unresponsive on the sidewalk along the 1500 block of Lukup Lane. Officers arrived within minutes and found Colorado, a Huntington Beach resident, suffering from several gunshot wounds.
First responders rushed to save her life, administering emergency aid on the scene before Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue took over. Despite their efforts, Colorado later died at a nearby hospital due to the severity of her injuries.
Though authorities initially held back her identity, they have now confirmed Monserrat Colorado as the victim. Investigators believe she may have known the shooter — a suspect who remains on the run.
So far, no description of the individual has been released, and no arrests have been made. Police are urging the public to help, especially anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or captured footage from the area.
Detectives are asking anyone with information to reach out to Detective Stocking at (714) 754-5392 or Sergeant Jacobi at (714) 754-5352. They stress that even the smallest detail could be vital in moving the case forward.
“This remains an active and ongoing investigation,” the Costa Mesa Police Department stated. “We are committed to finding justice for the victim and her family.”
