Nearly 70,000 South Africans—mostly Afrikaners—are lining up to seize Donald Trump’s controversial offer, but many may not fully understand what they’re signing up for.
In February, Trump declared that Afrikaners could qualify as refugees in the U.S., citing “unjust racial discrimination” as the reason. Since then, interest has skyrocketed. Neil Diamond, president of the South African Chamber of Commerce in the U.S. (Saccusa), recently confirmed that a staggering 67,042 people have registered on the chamber’s website, eager to relocate.
Speaking on Newzroom Afrika, Diamond revealed that most applicants are between the ages of 25 and 45. However, the biggest issue? Many don’t fully grasp what it means to be a refugee.
“We don’t have specific data on their professions—whether they are farmers, engineers, or doctors. But what’s clear is that a large number may not understand the refugee process,” Diamond explained.
Saccusa has provided official U.S. immigration resources to educate applicants, but it remains unclear where these hopeful South Africans would be settled if they were accepted.
Despite the overwhelming interest, the Chamber of Commerce has taken a neutral stance, neither encouraging nor discouraging people from leaving South Africa.
