Former Attorney General Bill Barr, who served under former President Donald Trump from 2019 to 2020, has voiced his apprehensions about the potential outcomes of a second term under Trump’s leadership.
In an interview with Fox News on Friday, Barr expressed concern regarding Trump’s governing style, characterizing it as ‘chaotic’ and ‘pandering to anger and frustration.’ He conveyed worries that such an approach might hinder accomplishment and pose challenges for the nation.
Barr, not endorsing Trump’s 2024 Republican nomination bid, acknowledged Trump’s potential for a second term but emphasized the need for advisors who would provide dissent and guide him toward a more constructive path. Barr highlighted the importance of individuals around Trump pushing back to maintain a balanced and effective administration.
”He needs people around him who will push back and help keep him on the straight and narrow,” Barr asserted.
Barr questioned the potential composition of Trump’s cabinet in a second term, expressing concerns about turnover and disagreements. He suggested that unlike the first term, there might not be sufficient checks and balances to restrain Trump in a second term.
Barr left the administration in December 2020 due to disagreements with Trump’s claims of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election. He raised doubts about the quality of individuals Trump might choose for his cabinet in a second term and the absence of guardrails.
”One of the reasons I’m against Trump as the [Republican National Committee] nominee is I don’t think he’s going to move the country forward,” Barr stated, highlighting his reservations about Trump’s ability to lead the nation positively.
Despite Barr’s concerns, recent polls indicate Trump’s continued popularity within the Republican Party. According to a Politico/Morning Consult survey, Trump leads the GOP field with 53% support, followed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis with 12% and former Vice President Mike Pence with 10%.
While Trump has not officially declared his candidacy, he has hinted at his intention to run again, maintaining a prominent position within the party through rallies and endorsements. Barr, for his part, declined to disclose his preferred candidate, stating that he will ‘pick my poison’ when the time comes.
