Realm of GOP presidential contenders, both Donald Trump and Nikki Haley find themselves entangled in controversy due to their comments on the Civil War. However, a recent report suggests that only one of them is facing consequences, and that’s because Trump enjoys a distinct advantage.
When probed about the cause of the Civil War, Haley omitted slavery from her response, while Trump proposed that the war should have been “negotiated,” disregarding the implication that such negotiations might perpetuate slavery in America. A writer for The Atlantic contends that despite Trump mocking Haley’s answer, the core issue is the same—Trump’s gaffe stems from a failure to acknowledge slavery’s pivotal role in the conflict. The report underscores that a negotiated settlement was unlikely due to the Southern states’ determination to continue enslaving Black people.
The public response to Haley and Trump’s remarks, however, diverges markedly. Haley, who has centered her campaign on competence and a no-nonsense demeanor, faced negative publicity and spent subsequent days clarifying her answer. In contrast, Trump’s commentary, despite being labeled as “three paragraphs of bullsh-t,” garnered a nonchalant reaction, characteristic of the many controversial statements he makes. Trump’s lack of damage control efforts and swift pivot from the issue further distinguish the disparate treatment between the two.
The report suggests that part of the reason for this divergence lies in Trump’s proclivity for generating numerous outrageous comments, making it challenging to sustain focus on any one of them. Trump’s well-established public persona, characterized by a lack of expectation regarding his historical knowledge and a deal-centric approach to everything, contributes to his perceived immunity. The report concludes that Trump’s secret weapon against Haley is the lower expectations attached to him, allowing him to navigate missteps with minimal repercussions. Despite running in different elections, Trump and Haley find themselves subject to dissimilar public reactions, with Trump emerging relatively unscathed from his controversial statements.
