A recent development, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has thrown his support behind Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene’s call for an investigation into Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. The allegations, as reported by Newsweek on Friday, January 12, 2024, suggest that Willis may have personally benefited from the selection of Nathan Wade to lead the RICO case against former President Donald Trump.

Governor Kemp, in a statement to Newsweek, acknowledged Greene’s right to bring her concerns to Georgia lawmakers and expressed deep concern over the allegations against Willis. While stopping short of explicitly endorsing an immediate criminal investigation, Kemp stressed the importance of swiftly presenting evidence to maintain public confidence in the trial.

Kemp pointed to the established process outlined by the Georgia General Assembly for such investigations, emphasizing the role of the oversight commission, which was set up last year and is deemed the appropriate body to address complaints of this nature.

Despite being members of the same party, Kemp and Greene have had differences, particularly regarding their perspectives on the 2020 presidential election. Kemp distanced himself from Trump and allies by affirming the security of Georgia’s elections and refuting claims of election fraud. In contrast, Greene, a staunch Trump loyalist, criticized Kemp for allegedly prioritizing his ego over the election’s integrity.

In her recent communication with Kemp, Greene raised concerns about Willis’s alleged improper relationship with the special prosecutor in the Trump case. This comes after revelations that Willis’s office was billed approximately $650,000 in legal fees by Nathan Wade’s office since his appointment. While the filings did not provide direct evidence of a romantic connection, they cited “sources with knowledge” to support the claims. Willis’s office has pledged to address these allegations in subsequent court filings.

On Wednesday, Greene accused Willis of engaging in an “unlawful partisan pattern” aimed at politicizing her public office to target President Trump and interfere in the 2024 presidential election.

These allegations have intensified calls for action against Willis. When the Trump indictment was initially released, some Georgia Republicans advocated for defunding and impeaching the attorney general. However, Kemp and Georgia House Speaker Jon Burns discouraged such efforts, emphasizing the importance of respecting the separation of powers.

Former President Trump criticized Kemp for refusing to investigate Willis, accusing the governor of actively opposing efforts to address the actions of the “crooked, incompetent, and highly partisan” Fulton County District Attorney.
