Democratic presidential contender Representative Dean Phillips of Minnesota has expressed apprehensions about President Joe Biden’s physical and communication decline, contributing to the ongoing debate regarding Biden’s age and his capability to serve another term.
In an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Phillips underscored the importance of respecting the president while acknowledging observable signs of decline, as reported by The Hill on Thursday, January 25.
“I’m an American, I want to respect my presidents. I do respect President Biden…I’m not seeing cognitive decline. Of course, we’re seeing physical and communication decline. I think that’s self-evident by any video, but I don’t think that is fair,” remarked Phillips.
Drawing attention to Biden’s 81 years, Phillips acknowledged the president’s elderly status, paralleling it to former President Donald Trump, who was 77 during his term.
Age has emerged as a focal point in the 2024 presidential campaign, with critics contending that it’s time for a younger leader and expressing concerns about Biden’s overall well-being.
Trump, in particular, has repeatedly targeted Biden’s age, recently releasing an ad humorously characterizing the White House as a senior living facility. However, it’s noteworthy that Trump himself is not significantly younger than Biden, turning 78 in June.
Throughout his campaign, Phillips has advocated for change, asserting that many Americans desire new leadership and are dissatisfied with both Biden and Trump. Reiterating this stance in the interview, he expressed, “Look, I’m running for change. I think we can do this so much better. I love my Republican colleagues. I love my Democratic colleagues.”
Positioning himself as part of the “exhausted majority in the middle,” Phillips voiced concerns about the influence of both the far-right and far-left in shaping the country’s future.
Despite initially contemplating suspending his campaign by March 5 if he failed to gain traction, Phillips has now stated his intention to stay in the race “as long as it takes” to secure a matchup against Trump.
The conversation around Biden’s age and physical well-being is likely to persist as the 2024 presidential campaign unfolds. While some share Phillips’ concerns, others argue that Biden’s experience and leadership outweigh any potential decline.
