Candid revelation within a collection of essays, JK Rowling discloses that her inner circle had earnestly implored her to withhold her controversial views on transgender women, a sentiment she admits led to feelings of guilt.
The renowned author, known for her celebrated Harry Potter series, has faced significant backlash from portions of her fanbase due to her vocal stance against the inclusion of trans women, asserting they are “not women.” This stance has drawn widespread criticism, including from Harry Potter film stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, both prominent advocates for the LGBTQI+ community.

Within her latest work, The Women Who Wouldn’t Say Wheesht, published by The Times, the 58-year-old author reflects on the pressure to remain silent despite her convictions. Rowling shares that she resisted the urge to speak out initially due to the pleas of those close to her. She reveals, “I watched from the sidelines as women with everything to lose rallied, in Scotland and across the UK, to defend their rights. My guilt that I wasn’t standing with them was with me daily, like a chronic pain.”
Despite the warnings, Rowling eventually broke her silence in December 2019, publicly expressing support for Maya Forstater, a researcher terminated from her position at the Centre for Global Development for questioning government gender policies. Since then, Rowling has continued to face criticism, particularly for her commentary on the NHS’ gender services for youth earlier this year.

Amidst the ongoing controversy, one of her followers referenced Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, speculating on potential apologies. Rowling responded directly, indicating forgiveness was not forthcoming. She emphasized the importance of acknowledging the concerns of “traumatised detransitioners and vulnerable women reliant on single sex spaces.”
While Daniel Radcliffe expressed sadness over Rowling’s views, reflecting on their past interactions during the filming of Harry Potter, the discord between the author and some of her former supporters remains unresolved.
