NEW YORK, November 29, 2023 — In a surprising declaration of loyalty, billionaire and retired Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus has pledged steadfast support for former President Donald Trump, who is currently embroiled in multiple criminal charges.
Marcus, a prominent Republican donor with a net worth of $8.7 billion, expressed his commitment to contribute to Trump’s potential 2024 campaign, even if the former president faces convictions in any of the four cases against him. Trump is currently dealing with charges related to the Capitol insurrection, allegations of pressuring Georgia officials, potential tax fraud, and obstruction of justice.
Despite the severity of the charges, Trump maintains his innocence, dismissing them as “witch hunts” and “hoaxes.” Marcus echoed this sentiment, describing the cases as “all trumped up” and emphasizing his belief in Trump’s innocence.
In an exclusive interview with Reuters, Marcus affirmed his support for Trump in both the Republican primary and, if nominated, the general election. “I think it’s all trumped up,” Marcus stated. “Of course, I’m going to support him to some extent, but I’m not one of his big givers, that’s for sure.”
A longstanding supporter of Trump since 2016, Marcus praised the former president’s economic policies and his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. In a recent op-ed on RealClearPolitics, Marcus endorsed Trump for the 2024 presidential race, urging Republicans to unite behind the controversial leader.
Despite legal challenges, Marcus is not the only billionaire rallying behind Trump. Late casino mogul Sheldon Adelson and hedge fund manager Robert Mercer, both influential GOP donors, have previously shown financial support for Trump, contributing millions to pro-Trump super PACs and conservative causes.
As Trump continues to face legal battles, his staunch supporters remain unfazed, highlighting the deep divisions within the Republican party and the enduring influence of the former president on key donors.
