Donald Trump’s once solid Republican stronghold in Florida is showing signs of weakening following his recent conviction in Manhattan. The Palm Beach Post, the local newspaper of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, has been flooded with letters from readers, many openly criticizing the former president in light of his guilty verdict.
According to Newsweek, on June 3, Trump was found guilty on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election. Despite Trump’s insistence on his innocence and claims of a “rigged trial,” some Florida Republicans are not convinced.
Local Voices Speak Out
Bill Morris from Palm Beach Gardens wrote to the Post, “Trump is now a convicted felon. He is the actual person who has acted in a criminal manner to try to conceal information regarding his own behavior.” Morris commended the “brave souls” who have upheld the rule of law and held Trump accountable for his “myriad of misdeeds.”

The criticism isn’t just about Trump’s legal issues but also targets his character. John B. Kern from Juno Beach highlighted the irony of Trump’s defense attorney calling Michael Cohen the “Greatest Liar of All Time,” pointing out Trump’s own track record of over 31,000 false statements during his presidency. Kern’s comment, “Once again, you can’t make this stuff up,” reflects the growing disillusionment among Trump’s supporters.
Calls for Withdrawal from 2024 Race
Alaric Lurie from Delray Beach expressed doubt about Trump’s future in the Republican Party. “It will be very interesting to see if the party of law and order abandons him as their candidate, or if they’ll cling to him and show that they, in fact, don’t care about law and order,” Lurie wrote.
Kirk Harris from North Palm Beach criticized senior MAGA Republicans for their response to the verdict. “Instead of supporting and defending our system and constitution, they choose to try to tear it down at the behest of their mob boss, now a convicted felon. Who is the threat to our democracy now?” Harris questioned.
A Shift in Trump’s Stronghold
These critical voices from Florida, a state Trump won in both 2016 and 2020, indicate a potential shift in his Republican base. The increasing number of voters openly trolling and criticizing him adds pressure for Trump to consider withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race. This mounting backlash marks a significant challenge for Trump, as his once solid Red State support appears to be crumbling.
