The poll results, released amid concerns over Biden’s electability, indicate a clear preference among Democratic voters for a stronger candidate. According to the survey, three-quarters of U.S. voters believe the Democratic Party would have a better chance of winning the November election with a nominee other than Biden.

Despite these sentiments, Biden’s head-to-head numbers against Trump have shown little change since April, with Trump maintaining a lead of 49% to 43%. Following Biden’s lackluster debate performance, 56% of Democrats now believe another candidate could enhance their prospects in the election—an increase from earlier this year.

Calls for Biden’s withdrawal from the race have surfaced among Democratic lawmakers, with Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas publicly urging Biden to step aside, reflecting growing apprehensions within the party about Biden’s candidacy.

Vice President Kamala Harris emerges from the poll as a potentially stronger contender against Trump, with 45% of voters favoring her compared to 47% for Trump, a statistical tie within the poll’s margin of error. This suggests Harris could offer a more competitive challenge to Trump in a general election scenario.

However, Harris faces challenges in terms of favorability ratings, with only 29% of all U.S. voters viewing her favorably, while 49% hold an unfavorable opinion. Despite this, Harris’s favorability ratings surpass Biden’s significantly, as 58% of voters view Biden unfavorably.

The poll also explores other potential Democratic contenders, including Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and California Governor Gavin Newsom. Both candidates are relatively unknown to a significant portion of voters, with 50% having no opinion on Buttigieg and 48% on Newsom, indicating a need for increased national visibility to be viable alternatives.

Meanwhile, former President Trump’s approval ratings among Republican voters have surged, rising by 11 points since April to 83%. This strong support underscores Trump’s enduring influence within the Republican Party and positions him as a formidable candidate for the GOP in the upcoming election.

The findings of the CNN poll underscore the complex dynamics within both major political parties as they prepare for the 2024 presidential race. For Democrats, there is a palpable desire for a candidate who can effectively challenge Trump, with growing support for Harris as a potential nominee. Conversely, Trump’s solidifying support among Republicans highlights his continued dominance and potential strength in the general election.
