Exceptionally rare piece of Harry Potter history has shattered records at a recent auction in the United States, fetching an astonishing £1.5 million ($1.9 million). Illustrated by Thomas Taylor at the age of 23, the iconic painting depicts Harry Potter standing before the Hogwarts Express on Platform 9¾ at King’s Cross station. Originally auctioned over two decades ago in 2001 for just over £85,000 (adjusted for inflation), its value has skyrocketed amidst the global phenomenon of the Harry Potter franchise.

Initially expected to fetch between £300,000 and £500,000 ($379,000 and $630,000), the bidding at Sotheby’s auction house far exceeded predictions. The final bid surpassed all expectations, tripling the highest estimated price ever for a Harry Potter collectible.

Kalika Sands, overseeing the auction, highlighted the enduring appeal of Harry Potter: “In the intervening decades, it’s been extraordinary to see the continuation of Harry’s story. The franchise’s immense popularity has introduced new generations to Harry and his remarkable journey.”

The artwork, crafted in watercolours with detailed black pencil outlines, took Taylor just two days to complete after reading the original manuscript. Bloomsbury, the publisher of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, selected Taylor after reviewing his submissions in 1996.

As the Harry Potter universe expands with new projects like the upcoming HBO TV series set to debut in 2026, the demand for authentic memorabilia continues to grow. Despite the absence of original cast members like Daniel Radcliffe in the new series, interest in the Wizarding World remains fervent among fans worldwide.

This record-breaking auction not only underscores the cultural significance of Harry Potter but also cements the artwork’s status as a prized collector’s item, marking a historic moment in the world of literary and cinematic memorabilia.
