Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a formal apology to the embassies of Canada, Gabon, and Burkina Faso following an alarming incident in Rio de Janeiro. Three Black teenagers, children of diplomats, were unjustly detained at gunpoint and subjected to a humiliating search by federal police officers while on vacation.
The incident, which occurred near the affluent neighborhood of Ipanema, sparked outrage after security camera footage of the encounter went viral. The footage depicted the teenagers, aged 13 and 14, being forcibly stopped and searched by police despite committing no offense. Notably, one of the teenagers involved was white, further highlighting the racial profiling evident in the officers’ actions.
Rhaiana Rondon, the mother of one of the Brazilian teenagers in the group, released the footage, underscoring the disparate treatment faced by the Black teens compared to their white counterpart. She emphasized that the officers used excessive force, pointing guns at the heads of the Black youths while handling the white teenager more gently.
In response to the outcry, Brazil’s foreign ministry swiftly convened meetings in Brasília and extended formal apologies to the affected embassies. They also initiated a thorough investigation into the incident to hold the responsible officers accountable.
