Former President Donald Trump has edged ahead of President Joe Biden in the race for the 2024 presidential election, according to the latest national poll results reported by CNN. The findings, released on November 8, 2023, have sent ripples through the political landscape, raising concerns within the Democratic camp about Biden’s chances for re-election.
The poll, conducted by CNN, revealed that among registered voters in a hypothetical 2024 general election matchup, Trump leads Biden by a slight margin of 49% to 45%. This result marks a notable expansion of Trump’s lead, which previously stood at 47% to 46% in a similar poll conducted late in August.
President Biden’s challenges are further compounded by the grim outlook painted by the poll’s additional findings. His approval ratings stand at a concerning 39%, with a striking 61% disapproval rate. Moreover, a staggering three-quarters of respondents expressed the belief that the country is heading in the wrong direction. Alarmingly, only a quarter of those polled expressed confidence in Biden’s ability to sustain the demands of the White House.
This setback for President Biden is not isolated, as another poll conducted by Siena College and The New York Times indicated Trump’s lead in five out of six crucial battleground states that Biden narrowly won in 2020. The polls also hinted at a decline in support among key demographics, including Black and Hispanic voters, as well as younger voters, all of whom traditionally constitute vital elements of the Democratic base.
In a CBS News national poll, Trump maintained his lead over Biden, standing at 51% to Biden’s 48% in a likely 2024 showdown. Additionally, Trump’s position as the front-runner in the 2024 GOP presidential nomination race appears secure, enjoying a robust 61% support from his party members, leaving potential rivals like DeSantis and Haley trailing far behind.
However, it’s essential to acknowledge the inherent volatility of political polls, especially this far ahead of the election. Biden’s campaign spokesperson, Kevin Munoz, emphasized historical examples, such as President Obama’s unexpected re-election in 2012, as evidence of the potential for unforeseen developments in the electoral landscape. He also referenced the 2022 midterms when initial forecasts of Biden’s grim outlook were ultimately proven wrong.
The CNN poll explored various scenarios involving other candidates as well. In a hypothetical matchup with former ambassador and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, Biden faced a six-point deficit, while a showdown with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis suggested a narrower two-point gap, falling within the poll’s sampling error. Even in a four-way race involving independent candidates Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Cornel West, Trump managed to maintain a lead, with Kennedy at 16% and West at 4%.
As the 2024 election season looms, President Biden’s challenges are starkly evident. The battle for public opinion and support intensifies, with the outcomes of these early polls providing a captivating glimpse into the evolving political landscape. While obstacles loom large for President Biden’s re-election campaign, the future remains uncertain, leaving room for dramatic shifts on the path to the 2024 election.
