Former President Donald Trump has unleashed a fiery response to New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s sharp criticism during her speech at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) on Monday. Hochul’s remarks, which labeled Trump a “fraud,” “philanderer,” and “felon,” sparked a heated exchange between the two political figures.
In her speech, Hochul emphasized that although Trump was “born a New Yorker,” he had distanced himself from the values she believes define the state. She accused him of never experiencing the struggles of everyday New Yorkers, such as managing child care costs, buying groceries, or paying rent. “He never had to worry about anything — or anyone — but himself,” Hochul stated, aiming to contrast Trump’s privileged background with the realities faced by many in the state.
Trump quickly took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to address Hochul’s comments, calling her the “nastiest” speaker at the DNC and accusing her of harboring “total hatred” towards him. “Kathy Hochul, the very unpopular Governor of New York, was the nastiest speaker on Monday evening as it pertains to your favorite President, me,” Trump wrote. He criticized Hochul’s speech for having “no bounds” in its negativity towards him.
Defending his record, Trump highlighted his contributions to New York, claiming he had created jobs, built successful buildings, and paid substantial taxes. He also suggested that New Yorkers would benefit from having a governor who could maintain a positive relationship with the president, hinting that Hochul’s antagonism could be detrimental to the state.
Trump didn’t shy away from addressing his ongoing legal battles in New York, which he believes are part of a biased and politically motivated campaign against him. He accused the New York judicial system, which he claims is controlled by Hochul, of treating him unfairly. Earlier this year, Trump’s business was ordered to pay over $355 million, a decision he attributed to a “witch hunt” led by New York Attorney General Letitia James and Judge Arthur Engoron. Additionally, Trump was convicted in a criminal case related to hush money payments, which he also described as politically driven.
In his online posts, Trump suggested that Hochul’s negative remarks are reflective of the broader hostility he faces from the state’s judicial system. He claimed that this bias is not only unfair to him but also detrimental to the state’s business climate, stating that companies are leaving New York because of what he perceives as a “RIGGED” system.
“With the vitriol displayed by her [Hochul] on Monday night, it is no wonder that the Judges have treated me so badly,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “The whole system is RIGGED, and companies are leaving because of it!!!”
The exchange between Trump and Hochul highlights the deepening divide between the former president and the New York political establishment, a rift that may have significant implications as Trump seeks to return to the White House in the upcoming election.
