A letter covered by The Hill on November 18, 2023, over 100 ex-White House officials have backed President Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war. The New York Times reported that the letter, with 127 signatures, applauds Biden’s moral clarity, courageous leadership, and unwavering support for Israel.

The officials support Biden’s proposed $14.3 billion aid package for Israel and his decision not to endorse a cease-fire. Notable signatories include Colin Kahl, Ron Klain, Lawrence Summers, and Representatives Josh Gottheimer, Wiley Nickel, and Haley Stevens.

The conflict, triggered by a surprise Hamas attack on Israeli border communities, has resulted in 1,200 deaths. Israeli actions, including air strikes and a ground campaign, have claimed over 11,100 Palestinian lives.

The public endorsement by these officials contrasts with dissent letters, which amassed over 2,000 signatures but remained anonymous to avoid potential repercussions. House Progressives and some Democrats have pushed for a cease-fire, highlighting divisions within the party.

Previous letters acknowledged support against Hamas but urged caution regarding Israeli military actions in Gaza, warning of potential complicity in genocide if action wasn’t taken.

Internal dissent is also evident within the State Department, where concerns about civilian casualties and strained relationships with other Middle Eastern nations persist. Staff members have sent private cables urging a cease-fire.

Democratic congressional staff have openly expressed dissent, staging a walkout in protest. As the conflict continues, divisions among Democrats escalate.
