A recent report by Newsweek (November 17, 2023), Mary Trump, former President Donald Trump’s niece, has revealed what she considers explosive evidence in support of the criminal case against him related to the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.
This revelation is part of the Department of Justice’s special counsel Jack Smith’s probe into the riot, where Trump faces charges linked to alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Despite being a frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, Trump, indicted in August, maintains his innocence.
Over 1,200 individuals have faced charges in connection to the insurrection, with more than 400 accused of assaulting or obstructing law enforcement, a felony offense, according to the latest DOJ data.
The newly disclosed evidence originates from a 2021 interview between Trump and ABC News correspondent Jonathan Karl. Mary Trump, providing the audio, believes it is the crucial evidence sought by Jack Smith.
In the interview, Trump boasts about the crowd size on January 6, challenging reported figures, and hints at a desire to return during the chaos. Former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson testified about an incident where Trump demanded to be taken to the Capitol, declaring, I’m the f***ing president.
Attorney Joe Gallina, from Call to Activism, emphasized the damning nature of Trump’s inaction during the violence on January 6. Gallina suggested that if prosecutors can establish Trump’s knowledge of his supporters’ violence and his failure to prevent it, it could be compelling evidence of his intentions.
As the controversy unfolds, Judge Tanya Chutkan, overseeing the case, has yet to rule on Trump’s legal team’s motion to dismiss the charges. The trial is set for March 2024, promising a high-stakes legal battle with potential implications for the former president’s political future.
