Kathryn Hahn has boldly taken on a groundbreaking role in Agatha All Along, bringing a new level of vulnerability and authenticity to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Reprising her fan-favorite character, Agatha Harkness, from WandaVision, Hahn chose to make a powerful statement by introducing nudity into her portrayal — a first for any female character in Marvel’s storied franchise. Discussing this bold choice with Jennifer Hudson in a recent interview, Hahn shared that this scene was not only intentional but entirely her idea.
“When we see Agatha at the beginning, she’s completely stripped of her powers,” Hahn explained to Hudson on The Jennifer Hudson Show. “She’s in a feral state, having lost touch with herself under Wanda’s spell. Instead of covering up, I felt that Agatha, just freed from years of confinement, wouldn’t even think to throw on a robe. She’s raw, and she’s ready to regain her sense of self.”
As Agatha All Along unfolds, the audience witnesses Hahn’s Agatha breaking free from Wanda Maximoff’s (Elizabeth Olsen) spell after a long three-year entrapment. The nudity in that first episode sets a tone that underscores her character’s journey, marking the start of a dangerous quest down the Witches’ Road to reclaim her powers.
Jennifer Hudson acknowledged Hahn’s commitment, noting that her approach to Agatha was a courageous choice, especially given the MCU’s traditionally chaste portrayal of characters. “That’s commitment!” Hudson marveled, with Hahn responding lightheartedly about the practicalities of filming, “There was a lot of double-sided tape. Every time I moved, it was like squeak, squeak, squeak!”
While this scene signifies a milestone, Hahn’s depiction of Agatha is about more than just breaking taboos; it’s part of an overarching thematic intent. With Agatha All Along drawing inspiration from iconic witches in pop culture, from Glinda and the Wicked Witch of the West to music icons like Stevie Nicks, the series brings a blend of dark, whimsical, and rebellious energy that broadens the MCU’s boundaries.
Jennifer Hudson presented Hahn with a unique plaque honoring her as the “First Woman to Show Butt in the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” solidifying her place in MCU history. Hahn laughed, comparing herself humorously to Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, known for a similar scene. “Thor and me,” Hahn chuckled, “Just our butts encased in gold — that’s my dream.”
The final two episodes of Agatha All Along are set to air on Disney+ on Oct. 30, offering fans an eagerly awaited conclusion to this innovative and daring series.
