A report by Raw Story on Friday, January 26, 2024, former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham shared insights into former President Donald Trump’s demeanor during the defamation case brought by writer E. Jean Carroll, appearing on CNN’s “Out Front.”

According to Grisham, Trump felt “intimidated” by Judge Lewis Kaplan, expressing that he appeared “a bit nervous” in the courtroom. Grisham characterized Judge Kaplan as ruling with an “iron fist” and maintaining strict order.

This stands in contrast to the legal proceedings overseen by Judge Arthur Engoron, where, as Grisham described, Trump and his counsel engaged in what she referred to as “carnival antics” in Manhattan Supreme Court. In this separate case, Judge Engoron is deliberating potential financial repercussions for Trump and whether he may face business restrictions in New York due to alleged widespread fraud.

Grisham highlighted Trump’s unease and intimidation by Judge Kaplan, particularly when he took the stand during the defamation case. She speculated that Trump’s nervousness was rooted in witnessing Judge Kaplan’s stringent control over the courtroom and his reluctance to allow certain actions by Trump’s attorney, Alina Habba.

During the direct examination, Habba asked Trump if he instructed anyone to harm Carroll, to which he responded, “No, I just wanted to defend myself, my family, and frankly, the presidency.” Judge Kaplan intervened, instructing the jury to disregard Trump’s answer.

Grisham suggested that Trump’s apprehension during the trial was fueled by a fear of potential consequences, despite his usual bravado. She highlighted a moment when Trump, after walking away, could be heard stating, “This is not America” three times, interpreting it as Trump expressing discomfort with the accountability imposed by the judicial system.

While Trump consistently claims victimhood in legal battles, asserting that he suffered damages and should receive restitution, Grisham’s insights offer a behind-the-scenes perspective on his demeanor during a critical moment in the legal proceedings. The contrast between Judge Kaplan’s courtroom discipline and Trump’s assertions and actions in other legal arenas creates a narrative of tension and unease surrounding the former president’s legal challenges. Grisham’s observations provide a glimpse into the dynamics at play during Trump’s court appearances, adding a layer of complexity to the ongoing legal saga.
