William H. McRaven, a retired four-star admiral and former Navy SEAL, recently drew sharp criticism of Donald Trump’s behavior, likening it to that of a “disturbed” 15-year-old. McRaven’s remarks come as part of a broader conversation about Trump’s suitability for the role of Commander in Chief, especially as the 2024 election approaches.
In a column for the Wall Street Journal, McRaven highlighted the qualities that have defined American leadership, referencing historical figures such as Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Ronald Reagan. He argued that while these leaders had their flaws, none exhibited the level of inconsistency in leadership principles as Trump has. McRaven stated, “The White House is the home of American leadership,” contrasting it with Trump’s recent antics, which he described as unbecoming of a leader holding the nuclear codes.
Unpresidential Behavior
McRaven pointed to specific examples of Trump’s behavior, including a recent off-color joke about golfing legend Arnold Palmer. He emphasized that such remarks are more befitting of a teenager than the leader of the free world. “These are things a disturbed 15-year-old boy would do,” McRaven remarked, urging voters to consider the implications of electing someone who regularly undermines foundational democratic values.
Further criticizing Trump, McRaven noted the former president’s derogatory comments about Vice President Kamala Harris, labeling her as “mentally impaired” and referring to her as a “s*** vice president.” He cautioned that if Trump is reelected, this type of “aberrant behavior” would likely continue and have lasting effects on the nation.
Military Perspectives
McRaven is not alone in voicing concerns about Trump. Other prominent military figures have echoed similar sentiments. John Kelly, former White House Chief of Staff and retired Marine Corps general, recently stated that Trump had praised Adolf Hitler in his presence, branding the former president as a “fascist.” This aligns with the sentiments expressed by veterans opposing Trump’s reelection, who see it as a potential threat to the future of the United States.
Glenn Schatz, Vice President of Veterans for Responsible Leadership, stated, “We view the Trump reelection as potentially an existential threat.” He expressed concerns that Trump’s second term could be even more extreme than the first, as he may not have the “adults in the room” to guide him.
Trump’s Support Among Veterans
Despite the criticisms from military leaders, Trump still enjoys significant support within the veteran community. A Gallup poll conducted in late August showed that approximately 61% of veteran registered voters intended to support Trump, compared to 37% leaning toward Harris.
