Two New York Yankees fans made headlines for the wrong reasons during Game 4 of the World Series after they forcibly ripped a foul ball from the glove of Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts. As a result, they have been banned from attending Game 5 at Yankee Stadium.

Incident Details

The incident occurred midway through the bottom of the first inning. Betts sprinted toward the right field line, attempting to catch a foul ball hit by Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres. After appearing to secure the ball, one of the fans pried Betts’ glove open, causing the ball to pop loose, while the other fan grabbed Betts’ hand.

ESPN reported that these fans initially believed they could attend Game 5, but Major League Baseball (MLB) officials notified the Yankees that the pair would not be allowed entry. The Yankees agreed to the ban, emphasizing that player safety and security are paramount during any event at the stadium.

Yankees’ Official Statement

In a statement, the Yankees condemned the actions of the two fans: “Last night, two fans were ejected from Yankee Stadium for egregious and unacceptable physical contact with Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts. The safety and security of players, fans, and stadium staff is the foundational element of every event held at Yankee Stadium, and it cannot be compromised.”

The statement continued, “Tonight marks the final home game of the year, and we want every ounce of our fans’ passion on display. Yankee Stadium is known for its energy and intensity; however, the exuberance of supporting one’s team can never cross the line into intentionally putting players at physical risk. The Yankees and Major League Baseball maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward the type of behavior displayed last night.”

Reactions from Players

Betts expressed his frustration over the incident, and Torres was ruled out due to fan interference. Commentators echoed the sentiment, with Joe Davis remarking, “A for effort,” while former MLB pitcher John Smoltz noted that the fan wouldn’t be watching the game for long.

Videos circulating on social media captured the fans being escorted from the stadium as they exchanged high-fives with fellow Yankees supporters on their way out. One fan described himself as a “hero,” arguing that it was a championship game.

Fans’ Justification

The fan identified by ESPN as a Yankees season ticket holder later shared his perspective at a local bar. He claimed that he and his friend had discussed their strategy for catching foul balls beforehand. “We always joke about the ball in our area,” he said. “If it’s in our area, we’re going to ‘D’ up. Someone defends, someone knocks the ball. We talk about it. We’re willing to do this.”

Game 4 Outcome

Despite the controversy surrounding the ejection, the Yankees went on to win Game 4 with a score of 11-4, cutting the Dodgers’ series lead to 3-1. Anthony Volpe hit a grand slam in the third inning, helping the Yankees stave off elimination.

Betts, reflecting on the incident afterward, said, “It doesn’t matter. We lost; it’s irrelevant. I’m fine, he’s fine, everything’s cool. We lost the game; that’s what I’m kind of focused on, turn the page. Everything’s fine.”
