Blake Snell, the left-handed pitcher for the San Francisco Giants, has decided to opt out of the final year of his contract, making him a free agent once again. This news was announced by the Giants on Friday, as reported by Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic.
By choosing to forgo a $30 million salary for 2025, Snell is taking a significant step as he looks to explore his options in free agency for the second consecutive year. Importantly, he is ineligible for a qualifying offer from the Giants after previously declining one from the San Diego Padres last November.
Despite winning the prestigious NL Cy Young Award in 2023 while playing for the Padres, Snell faced a lukewarm market during last year’s free agency. He ultimately signed a two-year, $62 million deal with the Giants late in spring training.
In 2024, Snell’s performance on the mound was impressive, despite making only 20 starts due to injuries and the late start to his season. The 31-year-old posted a solid 3.12 ERA and 1.05 WHIP, striking out 145 batters and achieving a career-high strikeout rate of 12.5 K/9 over 104 innings. He allowed just six home runs and improved his walk rate to below four walks per nine innings. Notably, Snell threw a no-hitter in July, marking his first career complete game and shutout.
As he re-enters the free-agent market, Snell is regarded as one of the top starting pitchers available, and he stands out as the best left-handed option this winter. Represented by agent Scott Boras, Snell is expected to command a substantial salary as he seeks a long-term deal.
Throughout his nine-year career, Snell has maintained a 3.19 ERA, 3.35 FIP, and 1.22 WHIP, recording 1,368 strikeouts across 211 starts with the Giants, Padres, and Tampa Bay Rays. He is also among the elite group of pitchers who have won the Cy Young Award in both leagues, having earned the AL honor with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2018.
As Snell embarks on this new chapter in his career, many eyes will be on him as teams look to bolster their pitching rotations with a proven talent like him.
