In a high-profile visit to a U.S.-Mexico border town, former President Donald Trump received a crucial endorsement from Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Sunday. The event, held at the South Texas International Airport in Edinburg on November 19, 2023, drew a crowd of approximately 150 attendees.

During the endorsement ceremony, Trump expressed confidence that his stringent immigration policies, if implemented in a second presidential term, would significantly ease Governor Abbott’s responsibilities. “You’ll be able to focus on other things in Texas,” Trump assured Abbott in front of the gathered audience.

Governor Abbott, a longstanding ally and advocate for strict border control, proudly endorsed Trump as the front-runner for the 2024 Republican nomination. “We need a president who’s going to secure the border,” Abbott emphasized, speaking in proximity to the Hidalgo Port of Entry, just 30 miles from Edinburg. “We need Donald J. Trump back as our president of the United States of America.”

Before the endorsement ceremony, Trump and Abbott actively participated in serving meals to Texas National Guard soldiers, troopers, and other personnel stationed at the border for Thanksgiving. The former president praised their efforts, stating, “What you do is incredible, and you want it to be done right.”

Governor Abbott expressed concern about the presence of Guard members and Texas troopers at the border, stating, “They should not be here at this time. They should be at home.” He attributed their deployment to the current administration’s failure to secure the border.

While Trump briefly touched on various issues in his speech, including inflation, the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, and media coverage, he did not delve into specific policy details. However, he reiterated his commitment to building more border walls and outlined several key immigration proposals:

– Reviving and expanding the controversial travel ban.
– Implementing “ideological screening” for immigrants.
– Deporting immigrants with “jihadist sympathies” and targeting foreign nationals expressing anti-American views.
– Invoking the Alien Enemies Act to remove known or suspected gang members and drug dealers.
– Ending birthright citizenship through executive order.
– Terminating work permits and cutting funding for illegal immigrants’ shelter and transportation.
– Cracking down on legal asylum-seekers and reinstating measures like Title 42.

Trump also called for Congress to pass a law imposing the death penalty for anyone caught trafficking women or children. Additionally, he proposed shifting federal law enforcement agents to immigration enforcement and repositioning troops stationed overseas to the southern border.

The border has been a focal point for both Trump and Abbott, with the latter approving substantial funding for new border wall construction and controversial measures allowing the arrest of migrants suspected of entering the country illegally. These efforts have triggered tensions with the Biden administration and drawn criticism from Mexico.

Despite occasional disagreements within the GOP, Abbott’s navigation has garnered broad support in Texas, where he has been successful in reaching Hispanic voters. Democrats, however, sought to portray Trump’s plans as extreme during the visit.

Recent polls indicate dissatisfaction with the Biden administration’s handling of immigration and border security, with Trump holding a significant advantage in public opinion on these issues.
