Praising the Election Threats Task Force for its pivotal role in prosecuting cases related to threats against election officials, Garland stressed the collaborative effort needed to effectively combat such threats. He highlighted a concerning trend of perpetrators using advanced technologies to conceal their identities and communicate threats, including burner phones, social media, onion routers, VoIP platforms, and overseas internet service providers.

Despite the perpetrators’ attempts to act with impunity, Garland assured that the Department of Justice, in collaboration with investigative agencies like the FBI and Department of Homeland Security, is actively working to unmask them and ensure accountability. He acknowledged the evolving nature of threats to the democratic process, particularly due to the proliferation of advanced technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), which provide new avenues for wrongdoers to hide their identities and disseminate misinformation.

Garland emphasized that crimes committed using AI are still crimes, and the Department of Justice will seek enhanced sentences in cases where threat actors utilize advanced technology to make crimes more dangerous and impactful. Additionally, he reaffirmed the importance of protecting election workers, pledging the Election Threats Task Force’s commitment to pursuing and holding accountable those who threaten election officials and the democratic process.

Expressing confidence in the Task Force’s ability to adapt to new challenges, Garland thanked all participants for their dedication to protecting democracy and ensuring the safety of election workers. His remarks underscored the Department of Justice’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the democratic process, combating threats to election integrity, and upholding the fundamental right to vote.
