During the ongoing fraud trial led by New York Attorney General Letitia James against former President Donald Trump, Judge Arthur Engoron has demanded an explanation from Trump’s legal team about a possible violation of the court’s gag order.
In a report by Raw Story on Friday, October 20, 2023, this incident occurred when Trump, known for his unconventional courtroom behavior, chose to skip proceedings to participate in a golf tournament.
The core of the issue revolved around a Trump Truth Social post that targeted Judge Engoron’s chief law clerk, which initially led to the imposition of the gag order.
Clearly unhappy with this violation, the judge confronted Trump’s legal team, led by Chris Kise, regarding the continued presence of the post on Trump’s 2024 campaign website, despite the court’s clear instructions.

During the court session, Judge Engoron expressed his displeasure, stating, “Despite my order, I recently discovered that the offending post was never removed from the website. This is a blatant violation of the gag order, and I made it clear that failure to comply would result in serious consequences.
The judge emphasized the seriousness of inflammatory remarks and their potential to cause harm, warning that this violation could lead to significant penalties or even imprisonment for the former president.
In response to the judge’s queries, Trump’s defense attorney, Chris Kise, explained that the presence of the post on the campaign website was unintentional. Kise stated, “To the best of my knowledge, this was an inadvertent oversight. The Truth Social post was promptly removed when the court requested it. Truth Social was taken down, and Trump refrained from making further comments about court staff. However, it seems the post was not removed from the campaign website. This was unfortunate, and I apologize on behalf of my client.”
The defense’s argument revolves around the claim that the violation was not intentional, and they promptly removed the post from Truth Social upon the court’s request. Nevertheless, the delayed removal from the campaign website raises questions about the effectiveness of their internal controls.
This incident highlights the challenges presented by high-profile trials involving public figures and their use of social media.
Judge Engoron’s scrutiny of Trump’s online activities, even in his absence from the trial, underscores the importance of upholding court orders and the potential consequences of disregarding them.
As the trial continues, all eyes remain on the courtroom drama surrounding Trump’s legal battles, leaving observers to speculate about how these incidents might affect the broader proceedings and Trump’s legal standing in the future.
