Arsenal’s Social Media Gaffe After Spain’s Victory
Arsenal found themselves at the center of ridicule after posting a congratulatory message on social media following Spain’s triumph over France at Euro 2024. Spain secured a spot in the final by defeating France 2-1, thanks to goals from Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo.
The Post and the Backlash
After Spain’s victory, Arsenal’s social media team took to X (formerly Twitter) to praise David Raya, the club’s goalkeeper who recently joined Arsenal on a permanent deal. The post highlighted Raya’s Premier League Golden Glove award and his team’s advancement to the Euro 2024 final: “Golden Glove winner at Arsenal. Euro 2024 finalist. Some season for our David.”
However, rival fans were quick to mock Arsenal’s post, pointing out that Raya had played only one match in the tournament, a relatively insignificant game against Albania. Unai Simon has been Spain’s primary goalkeeper throughout Euro 2024.
Fan Reactions
Rival supporters flooded the comments with sarcastic remarks:
“Incredible performance! Always there when Spain needs him.”
“Unbelievable performances. Perfect posture as always on the bench.”
“Hasn’t conceded a goal all tournament.”
“Never known a club like it. They’re fascinating.”
“They keep milking that golden glove like it’s a Ballon d’Or.”
These comments underscored the irony of Arsenal’s praise for Raya, given his limited role in Spain’s campaign.

David Raya’s Season
Despite the social media misstep, David Raya had an impressive season, keeping 16 clean sheets in the Premier League and earning the Golden Glove award. His performances last season, while on loan from Brentford, convinced Arsenal to sign him on a long-term contract.
Arsenal’s attempt to celebrate their player’s achievements inadvertently opened them up to mockery from rival fans. While David Raya’s contributions to his club have been significant, his limited involvement in Spain’s Euro 2024 journey made Arsenal’s post seem out of touch, providing fodder for their rivals.
