Former Vice President Mike Pence announced the suspension of his bid for the Republican presidential nomination on Saturday. Pence, addressing a gathering of the Republican Jewish Coalition in Las Vegas, revealed that he had decided to halt his campaign for the White House, citing challenges in fundraising and gaining momentum in the polls.
“After much prayer and deliberation, I have decided to suspend my campaign for president effective today,†Pence declared, acknowledging the uphill battle his campaign faced. “We always knew this would be an uphill battle, but I have no regrets,†he affirmed.
This decision, made over two months before the crucial Iowa caucuses, rescued Pence from the potential embarrassment of not qualifying for the third Republican primary debate scheduled for November 8 in Miami. Despite Pence’s long-standing loyalty to his former boss, Donald Trump, he found himself overshadowed and struggled to carve a niche for himself in a race that was dominated by the former president.
Pence’s withdrawal marked a significant blow for a politician who had spent years as Trump’s steadfast supporter, only to face backlash during their final days in office. Trump, convinced that Pence possessed the power to overturn the results of the 2020 election, turned on him, leading to a strained relationship between the two.
Critics viewed Pence as an enabler, defending Trump’s actions even when they were widely condemned. A survey conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research in August revealed that 57% of U.S. adults viewed Pence negatively, with only 28% having a positive view of him.
Throughout his campaign, Pence attempted to increase his visibility, visiting diners and Pizza Ranch restaurants in an effort to connect with voters. His strategy focused on emphasizing his hard-line stances, particularly on issues like abortion, where he advocated for a minimum 15-week national ban.
Despite his efforts, Pence struggled to gain traction both with voters and donors. His campaign finances reflected the challenges, ending September with a mere $1.18 million in the bank and $621,000 in debt. Pence’s financial struggles seemed insurmountable, given his lack of personal wealth.
Interestingly, Pence’s campaign gained renewed vigor after Hamas’ attack on Israel in October, which brought foreign policy to the forefront. Pence passionately warned against the growing tide of isolationism within the Republican Party, positioning himself as the most experienced candidate.
Following the suspension of his presidential campaign, Pence is expected to remain active through Advancing American Freedom, the conservative think tank he founded after leaving the vice presidency. The organization aims to advocate for policies that Pence championed during his run, including increased U.S. support for Ukraine’s defense against the Russian invasion and proposed cuts to Social Security and Medicare to address the national debt.
Pence’s decision to suspend his campaign has left the political landscape abuzz with speculation. As the race for the 2024 Republican nomination continues, the absence of Pence’s candidacy leaves room for other contenders to emerge, reshaping the dynamics of the upcoming elections.
