In a recent episode of “Real Time,” comedian Bill Maher shared insights into why Donald Trump is emerging as a formidable candidate for president, surpassing not only within his party but also gaining a significant edge over President Joe Biden in polls. Maher, joined by former Democratic National Committee Chair Donna Brazile and former U.S. House Representative Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), emphasized Trump’s consistent rhetoric on bringing blighted communities “under control.”
“Trump is killing it—not just within the party, but he’s beating [President Joe] Biden heavily too,” Maher asserted during the panel discussion.
Maher illustrated his point by referencing the recent Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference in San Francisco, where he argued that Biden and Democrats concealed the city’s problems. Criticizing the temporary efforts to clean up the city during the event, Maher remarked, “Put aside the fact that you only clean up when you have company coming over. So they cleaned it up, they get vagrants off the street, the homeless. God forbid the guy who sends us the fentanyl sees somebody on fentanyl.”
In Maher’s perspective, this example exemplifies why Trump is gaining popularity. He questioned the Democrats’ approach, stating, “The fact that the Democrats could control it for three days, how about making it permanent?”
Donna Brazile concurred with Maher, acknowledging that people tend to “clean up” only when “something different happens.” She posed a crucial question to the audience, “Can we keep it clean? Can we all pull in together? …That homeless people are not forced to sleep on the street?” Her statement was met with applause, leading to a discussion on the pressing need for more quality affordable housing.
Adam Kinzinger echoed Brazile’s sentiments, expressing the urgency for Democrats to secure victory in 2024, emphasizing the perceived danger posed by Republicans to the country.
