A recent turn of events, Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) signed an election reform bill on Friday, sparking controversy among Republicans. The new law aims to streamline local elections into even-numbered years, a move praised by many for its potential cost savings and increased voter turnout.
However, GOP Representative Mike Lawler voiced his displeasure on social media, accusing Democrats of manipulating election laws for their benefit. Lawler criticized the decision to shift elections to even years and raised concerns about limiting lawsuits to specific counties, altering absentee ballot rules, and influencing court appointments for gerrymandering purposes.
The level of corruption and total disdain for the voters is breathtaking, Lawler expressed, labeling Gov. Kathy Hochul as a complete disgrace.
Former Rep. George Santos, who has been at odds with the GOP, responded mockingly, accusing the Republican establishment of self-serving actions and manipulating voter turnout for their advantage.
Lawler, identified as one of the most vulnerable House Republicans in 2024, faces challenges amid Democratic efforts to redraw New York State’s congressional maps.
New York, historically known for voting difficulties, has recently taken steps to address voter suppression. In 2022, Democrats passed a state-level Voting Rights Act, followed by a bill in September allowing no-excuse mail-in voting.
