Former President Donald Trump is pinning his hopes on the Supreme Court to overturn his impending sentencing on July 11, following his conviction on 34 felony counts linked to hush money payments.
According to a report by Newsweek on Monday, June 3, 2024, Trump is confident that the Supreme Court, which now includes three justices he appointed, will step in to support him.
This optimism follows a trend of Trump seeking judicial backing from his appointees and conservative-dominated courts.
Trump’s legal woes stem from allegations that he paid $130,000 to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to keep quiet about an alleged affair prior to the 2016 presidential election. The payment, documented through falsified business records, led to his conviction on multiple counts of falsifying business records.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, whose office filed the charges, has frequently been the subject of Trump’s criticisms, with Trump accusing Bragg of politically motivated prosecution.
In his plea to the Supreme Court, Trump highlighted the timing of his sentencing, just four days before the Republican National Convention.
“The ‘Sentencing’ for not having done anything wrong will be, conveniently for the Fascists, 4 days before the Republican National Convention,” Trump wrote in a social media post. He has consistently asserted that the case against him is politically driven, referring to Bragg as a “Radical Left Soros-backed D.A.”
Trump’s confidence in the Supreme Court is reinforced by its current conservative majority of 6-3, including Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett, all appointed by him.
Trump has openly expressed his belief that these justices will shield him from what he perceives as an unjust legal onslaught.
This conviction is further supported by favorable rulings he has received from other judges appointed by Trump, such as Aileen Cannon in the classified documents case.
In a strongly worded statement, Trump called on the Supreme Court to take decisive action.
“A Radical Left Soros-backed D.A., who campaigned on a platform of ‘I will get Trump,’ reporting to an ‘Acting’ Local Judge, appointed by the Democrats, who is HIGHLY CONFLICTED, will make a decision which will determine the future of our Nation? The United States Supreme Court MUST DECIDE!” he proclaimed.
As Trump braces for the next stage of his legal battle, the role of the judiciary, particularly the Supreme Court, will be closely monitored by both supporters and detractors.
Whether the Supreme Court will intervene as Trump hopes remains uncertain, but the outcome will undoubtedly carry significant implications for his political prospects and the broader political landscape.
