The small town of Freeport, Pennsylvania, has come together to remember Corey Comperatore, the 50-year-old volunteer firefighter who tragically lost his life shielding his family from gunfire during a recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
The community gathered for the first of two public memorials to honor Comperatore’s life and service. Hundreds of mourners, including firefighters, friends, and locals, attended the vigil at the Lernerville Speedway in Sarver on July 17, 2024. The event aimed to promote “unity” following the violent incident, as reported by The Guardian.
Upon arrival, attendees saw a tribute sign reading “Rest Peace Corey Thank You for Your Service,” accompanied by the logo of Comperatore’s fire company. The route leading to the venue was lined with supportive messages for the Comperatore family, reflecting the community’s solidarity during this difficult period.
Comperatore was more than just a firefighter. He was a devoted father, husband, and friend, with a diverse background as a project and tooling engineer, an Army reserve member, and a passionate volunteer firefighter in Freeport.
The vigil emphasized that the event was non-political, focusing instead on coming together in support of the Comperatore family. Eulogies highlighted Comperatore’s deep commitment to his family, faith, and community.
“Corey was the very best of us,” said Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. “Corey died a hero. He protected his family, was a dedicated firefighter, and a loving member of his church and community.”
Attendees reflected on Comperatore’s infectious smile, positivity, and selflessness. The vigil concluded with a candlelight ceremony, where mourners lit candles and raised their cellphones in a heartfelt tribute to Comperatore, accompanied by his favorite song from the Christian rock band MercyMe.
The loss of Corey Comperatore has profoundly affected the Freeport community. The vigil highlighted the town’s resilience and unity as they navigate the aftermath of the assassination attempt and focus on healing and recovery.
